SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE


Writing: Over 30 years of writing feature stories and weekly columns, including one about dining (”Grazing”) over 25 years and another about psychology and culture (“Headcase,”) for about 20 years. Also have maintained a newspaper dining blog (“Omnivore”) for four years. Also wrote a bi-weekly column, “Out of Bounds,”  for the magazine, ETC.


Editing: About 15 years as editor of monthly city magazines and weekly newspapers.


Psychology: About 17 years of work in the field, training as a psychotherapist, then developing Imaginal Training, an aesthetic approach to psychological concerns outside  the canon of therapy. See clients individually and in groups.


Workshops: About 15 years of 10-week workshops. The foundational one, “Greeting the Muse,” was profiled by Common Boundary Magazine and Atlanta Magazine. Originally developed as an alternative to psychotherapy for people with creative blocks. Now open to other clients with “personal growth” concerns. Other workshops: dreams, memoir writing, the body and gender.


Cyberwork: Unique work with group and individual clients in cyberspace.. The client sets up a blog and responds to weekly assignments, often in the form of a riddle. Clients reply with writing and images that become the basis of sessions. Clients repeatedly bring up material in cyberspace that is undisclosed in face-to-face interactions.

EMPLOYMENT HISTORY


Self-employed for 20-plus years, working in psychology and as a writer. Under contract to Creative Loafing, long the nation’s largest alternative newspaper, for that entire time.


Editor, Creative Loafing, Atlanta, 1982-1990. Edited the Atlanta publication and helped open sister papers in Tampa and Charlotte. (Two stints.)


Editor, Houston Home & Garden, 1985-1986. This was the largest regional design magazine in the country. Merged with the city magazine after a year.


Prior to these years, under contract to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Sunday Magazine, Atlanta Magazine, South, Brown’s Guide to Georgia. Also under contract to Texas Monthly in the ‘80s and to HarperCollins for a book on the world of Flannery O’Connor.


EDUCATION


PhD in Depth Psychology, Pacifica Graduate Institute.


MA in psychology, West Georgia University.


BA in journalism and Spanish, Georgia State University (Also attended William and Mary and received a fellowship to Yale before transferring to Georgia State.)


PUBLICATIONS & CONFERENCES


Dissertation: A rapprochement between postmodern and Jungian discourses, with demonstration of an aesthetic, performance-oriented approach to psychological issues.


Presented papers at four academic conferences.


Other academic papers have been widely reprinted on the Internet.


One paper published in Psychological Perspectives.


Participant in several seminars for writers and artists and one on cyberspace and psychology.
